School Garden

Welcome to Our Living Classroom!

At our school, education meets the great outdoors. Our school garden is a thriving hub for biodiversity, environmental stewardship, and hands-on discovery.

Exploring Our Eco-Environs

Our garden features distinct, signed zones designed to engage students and visitors alike. You can wander through the Woodland Garden, explore the Bog Garden, or visit the Vegetable Patch. To deepen our connection to nature, our trees feature tri-lingual labels (English, Gaeilge, and Latin), while six weatherproof boards showcase native Irish wildlife.

The Outdoor Classroom & Seasonal Learning

The crown jewel of our garden is the New Outdoor Classroom, co-designed by our students and landscape architect Sophie Von Maltzan. Here, lessons shift with the seasons:

  • Spring: Students gather around our child-friendly pond to observe frogspawn, tadpoles, and newts.

  • Summer: Classes conduct insect hunts and visit the Bee and Butterfly Garden to learn about pollinators.

  • Autumn: Focus shifts to our bat boxes and log-piles to study hibernation and look for visiting hedgehogs.

From Seed to Supper

We teach children exactly where their food comes from by involving them in planting, maintaining, and harvesting:

  • Homegrown Goodness: Harvested vegetables are eaten at school or sent home to family dinner tables.

  • Fruit Bounty: Students use school-made compost to nourish fruit bushes and fruit trees, enjoying produce straight from the branch.

  • Sweet Treats: Summer fruits are frozen so students can experience the magic of making their own jam.

Caring for Our Wild Neighbours

Our students are passionate wildlife caretakers. We provide bird boxes, baths, and feeders across the grounds. Notably, our creative Garden Club crafts custom feeders using pine-cones, lard, and sunflower seeds harvested directly from sunflowers the children plant each year.

Keeping it Green and Clean

Environmental education goes hand-in-hand with civic responsibility. To keep our sanctuary pristine, our 2nd Class leads fortnightly litter patrols, and students channel their creativity into the environment during the National Spring Clean.

Our garden is a testament to what happens when children, nature, and community come together. We invite you to explore, learn, and grow with us!
